Writing Assignment- Fonts

Objective: Find a basic font on www.dafonts.com and write about it.

Font Assignment

I chose the font Franchise. Franchise is a sans serif font that is very clean and professional. It would easily be used in a professional setting for many forms of advertisement. Menus, billboards, and informational brochures are forms of advertisement where Franchise could be used. It has all uppercase lettering which would imply importance. Franchise also is a bold face type that also allows people to notice it quickly. The cleanliness and uniformity of Franchise enables one to read it easily and focus on the meaning of the word instead of being distracted by the design of the font.

Project 1

Our first project for Intro to Design was to create a collage.
Requirements
  • 9in x 11.5 in with 1/2 in bleed included
  • 300 DPI (72 for Web)
  • Use pen tool to cut out image objects
  • Used Google Images using Larger images
  • Use a unifying graphic to keep things tied together (wings and butterflies)

Writing Assignment- Principle—Unity

                Unity is the need to work your design together.  It’s a measure of how all the items or elements on your work fit together.  Your work is first a whole, then broken down into its parts.  There are several ways to achieve unity in your design: repetition, proximity, and continuation.  Repetition is the use of color, texture, shapes, and objects repeatedly in your work.  If you have an image with a sunset setting, repeating the dimness or the color pattern of the rays across the entire image would be an example of repetition.  Another would be the texture of snow in a winter setting.  Proximity is the simpilest method of unity.  By placing objects that belong together close to each other, forming a pattern for us to see.  Placing vases close together forming  a visual pattern would portray proximity.  Finally, continuation is a more subtle form of unifying your work.  Continuing a line, edge, or  direction from an area to another.  If you have an object that is flowing in the wind, other objects would have the same directional flow to get the image of wind across to its viewers.  Unity is my favorite principle because of the simplicity of it, yet can have one of the greater effects in your work.

            While working with GIMP on my first project for my Intro to Design class, I came across something that had me a bit confused.  I noticed that you could unlink the X and Y resolutions to input separate values.  I was unsure how that would work or how they could be used.
            After hours of researching I have found some information towards the answer.  However, I was unable to find an exact common answer, but a similar use. This is what I found.
            On a Photoshop forum I found a question similar to mine, and a small debate as to what it would be used for.  The common reasoning for a separate X and Y resolution would be used for a 3D image.  For example, building a 3D sphere or cylinder would require a separate resolution for clarity.  Having square pixels would distort the texture image of the models.  Whereas a rectangular pixel would fit better with less distortion.
            I also asked my brother, James Brewer, who builds 3D models for virtual worlds on the internet.  He agreed that using separate resolutions for textures used on spherical and cylindrical shapes creates less distortion in the image.  He also mentioned that it can come into play with poster or large print media.
            I also found a second reason for the difference in the X and Y resolution density.  When televisions were first made, the pixels were not square.  Both NTSC and PAL televisions did not use square pixels.  PAL televisions’ pixels are wider, while NTSC pixels are taller.  This ratio would require separate pixel resolutions.
            In conclusion the X and Y resolution in GIMP would be used  more for odd shape texture images for 3D modeling.  Since NTSC and PAL are analogue television encoding systems still used in many countries, the X and Y resolutions would still be used for the purpose of analog televisions.

I chose to do a tutorial on the Brush Tool.  I found the tutorial on www.psd.tutsplus.com and it’s titled Photoshop Brush Tool: A Basic Guide.  I chose the brush tool tutorial because I like playing around and just seeing what different things that you can do with a paintbrush.  Things like other shapes, the dynamics of the colors, and combining different brushes to get more of an effect in the design.
In this tutorial I learned about using the brush presets, modifying brush properties, blending modes, pressure controls, and creating a brush from scratch.  The tutorial was very fun and informative for many reasons, though creating a brush from scratch was my favorite.
The brush tool is the basic painting tool in Photoshop and is located in the standard tool bar.  The shortcut for the brush tool is B and the tool works by adding shaped marks on a selected layer.  There are essential options associated with the brush tool.  Things like brush tip shape, blending mode, opacity, and flow.
Brush tip is the basic option, however with many of the presets you can adjust the master diameter and the hardness of the brush allowing for different effects with the tip.  There are several blending modes.  Even a photoshop pro is always learning new things to do with blending modes.  Some of the more frequently used modes are the normal mode, dissolve mode, behind mode, and clear mode.  The opacity value of the brush tool is the percentage of transparency associated with the stroke of the brush.  The flow value is a percentage that sets the rate for the amount of color applied, and cannot exceed the opacity percentage unless it is clicked in the same spot more than once.
I also learned about the brushes panel.  This panel is an easy way of creating, editing, saving, and loading a particular brush behavior or preset.  To access the brush panel go to Window > Brushes, or simply use the shortcut key, which is F5.  From here you can see many of the different options for brushes.
I then learned about creating a brush from my own image.  With this I learned how to change the RGB visibility on and off in the channels, how to invert the colors in an image, copy and pasting an image, and how to select an entire image.
Not only did I learn about the brush tool, scattering, and the axis of your brush in doing this tutorial, but how to invert images, using the channels, creating a layer mask, and creating my own brush tool.
